113 scholars in the Equity Leaders Program secured admission and scholarships to various prestigious global universities for the 2023/2024 academic year. These scholars come from Kenya, with 82; Uganda, with 8; Rwanda, with 21; and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 2. In all, the scholarship is valued at Ksh. 2.8 billion, which is equivalent to USD 21.5 million for their four-year duration of study.
The students have been admitted into 71 universities on five continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—all totaling 22 countries. This milestone brings the number of ELP scholars who have ever been admitted and won scholarships to study in global universities to 970.
EGF Executive Chairman Dr. James Mwangi commissioned the airlift of the scholars and affirmed the transformative role that these students are about to have towards changing the face of Africa’s development challenges. Dr. Mwangi tasked the scholars to pursue adaptability, integrity, and innovation as they jetted off for their academic journeys. He noted that the contribution the scholars will make towards the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan, ARRP, that aims at driving the socio-economic transformation of the continent.
The Equity Leadership Program was started in 1998 by the Equity Group Foundation to come up with a new class of leaders. This program has emerged as a driver of change through the identification and development of a pool of high-potential students, equipping young minds with leadership capacity, knowledge, and networks to drive growth in Africa in a manner that is sustainable and responsive.
As these students are standing on the threshold of their respective colleges, they carry with them the ambition and the aspiration of the family and country to make a difference in the global scene.
