27-Year-Old University of Nairobi Student Found Dead in Suspected Suicide

Police launch probe into the death of Frankline Ondwari, 27, a student at the University of Nairobi, whose body was found in a toilet along Kirinyaga Road, Nairobi. His decomposing body was discovered hanging from the window of a place he lived with his friend. Missing since July 17, Ondwari had left his mobile phone charging before his disappearance.

It was after a friend of the deceased, who is also a student, noted a foul smell from the toilet and found Ondwari’s body hanging on a rope. The two students lived on the 20th floor of a residential along Kirinyaga Road. Authorities have not established any motive as investigations continue. The body was moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home for a post-mortem and other investigations.

Cases of suicide are reportedly on the rise, with the World Health Organization attributing such incidents to aspects such as unemployment, pressure from school performance, financial troubles, legal problems, bullying, substance abuse, and mental disorders.

A 30-year-old casual laborer, Kevin Baraza Mvuya, died after a casting machine crushed him at a construction site in Loresho, Nairobi. The incident happened on Tuesday at midday while Mvuya was working with about 20 other workers. He fell with the machine, which landed on his head, leaving him with serious injuries. Despite rushed service to PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, Mvuya succumbed to his injuries due to profuse bleeding and head trauma. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, the latest in a string of construction site accidents.

In another tragic incident, a 73-year-old gardener Khatikhwi Lolo was found dead within the residential area of a sugar factory in Kabras, Kakamega County. The police are yet to establish what killed him. His remains were moved to the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
