Central Region Dominates National Special Needs Education Championship

For the third time running, Central Region has retained the wheelchair basketball girls’ title in the just concluded National Special Needs Education, SNE, Secondary Schools Championship in Kisumu County. The region gathered 12 points to relegate their closest challengers, the Western Region, to second place with 10 points, as the Nyanza Region managed eight points for third place.

Other categories ended with biting competition in the weeklong championship, which concludes today. Western emerged the victors in the amputee boys’ football with 12 points, beating Central in a tightly contested match. Rift Valley and Nyanza tied at third position with six points each.

In the football category for cerebral palsy boys, Western Region again emerged the top with eight points, ahead of Coast and Central, who had five points. The trophy for the para volleyball went to Nyanza with 12 points, followed by Rift Valley with 10, then Western with eight.

In the championship of blindfold goal game that went down at Kisumu Girls High, Dancun Kimutai was named Player of the tournament. This catapulted his immense talent and dedication.

The event attracted over 600 participants from eight regions across Kenya, competing in at least thirteen different sporting activities. Presiding over the opening ceremony for the games at the Kisumu Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground, Kisumu County Deputy Governor Mathew Owili appreciated the involvement of local stakeholders in ensuring Kisumu plays host to this year’s event.

According to Owili, the games were beyond regional and cultural boundaries and hugely united the country. He added that it was a special forum for young and up-and-coming talents to showcase their potential, with prospects for participation in the future at both national and international levels.

The championship wound up with consistent performance that cemented the reputation of Central Region as a powerhouse in the National SNE Secondary Schools Championship, inspiring other regions to do better still in the next competitions.
