CLE Admits Mixing Up 2023 and 2024 Lawyers’ Exam Results

Mistakes have been admitted by the Council of Legal Education in the results of the Advocate Training Programme examination, which has sparked protests by lawyers outside the council’s headquarters.

It was on July 10, 2024, that the attorneys noticed the test results published on the CLE website were similar to those published in 2023. This infuriated candidates who sat for the ATP exams. Subsequently, the CLE issued a statement expressing disappointment over a display glitch. It said candidates viewed results from the November 2023 instead of April 2024 examination.

CLE ensured the mistake was identified, corrected, and measures put in place to ensure it does not happen in the future. The examination body apologized to the affected lawyers for the anguish caused by the wrong results. It assured the public that the results it has since released are credible and comparable to the previous years’ performance.

To avoid any similar drama in the future, CLE announced that it would not release a PDF containing the results of all candidates to members of the public. The law students will now access their ATP results through their personal portals, as required by the Data Protection Act. A PDF document shall, however, be availed at CLE for the candidates to view their scores per unit and per attempted question.

CLE has also taken cognizance of the various concerns voiced by students in the field of law studies and announced effective measures to mend the administration of the ATP examination, including the procedures for creating, assessing, and moderating the exams, right back to the ultimate accountability process.
