Court Halts University Lecturers’ Strike as Negotiations Continue

A Labour Court has issued a temporary order barring the University Academic Staff Union from declaring or encouraging a strike before negotiation of the employment dispute is completed.

Justice Jacob Gakeri of the Employment and Labour Relations Court made the ruling following an application by the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum under the Federation of Kenya Employers.

The Judge declared the matter urgent, directing both parties to continue engaging each other with the view of finding a solution to the problems that have caused strikes in the university sector.

The court ordered the union and other interested parties to file a response to the application within seven days and the matter be mentioned on October 2 for further directions.

This development temporarily relieves the impending strike to allow for more time to find a solution through negotiations between the union and university councils.
