Court Orders Egerton University to Offer Remedial Classes for Engineering Graduates

The Milimani High Court has ordered Egerton University to provide remedial classes to Engineering graduates following a row with the Engineers Board of Kenya. It emerged after EBK declined to register Engineering graduates from Egerton, arguing that the university offered unaccredited Engineering courses between 2014 and 2019.

On Thursday, August 15, judge Lawrence Mugambi ordered the university virtually to ensure the affected graduates are facilitated to undertake the recommended remedial classes in the next three months. The court emphasized that the classes should be in line with EBK’s recommendations and all costs shall be met by Egerton University.

He stated that even if the graduates were to be registered as graduate engineers, it would not be enough since it would be too late after denying them a chance to work as engineers. Other than the declaration, the Commission for University Education, CUE, shall no longer approve and accredit courses in Engineering in any university in Kenya without the approval of EBK.

The institution has been advised to collaborate with EBK and CUE in ensuring that the programmes offered in engineering are properly regulated and the requirements for registration clearly spelt out. Institutes are to work in collaboration to forestall such standoffs in the future.

The court failed to issue an order stopping Egerton from offering any ongoing unaccredited courses but emphasized that the situation must be sorted for the students concerned.
