Fire Razes Down Kerugoya Boys’ Dormitory

On the evening of July 14, 2024, one of the dormitories of Kerugoya Boys’ High School in Kirinyaga County was razed by fire. This happened before 8 PM, displacing many students and causing property damage whose value is not yet estimated. The students were attending evening classes when the fire broke out.

According to John Kiama, the head of the county fire department, an alert on the fire was raised and well responded to. Though responding promptly, they still could not manage to save the properties that were placed in the dormitory since it had already been consumed by flames. A good number of students, luckily, were safe and alive.

Following the incident, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Allasow visited the school and claimed that investigations were going on to establish the cause of the fire. He urged members of the school community to be calm and cooperate during this period.

Commissioner Allasow ordered the county security team, in conjunction with the principal of the school, to take all measures necessary to ensure no student is put in danger again. It will involve increasing security and carrying out thorough checking so that a similar incidence does not recur in the future.

Undeniably, the blaze has caused some disruptions at Kerugoya Boys’ High School. The dormitory burning down means the school has to act fast to ensure that the displaced students are accommodated. Valuation of the total value of property lost is underway, and the school administration is expected to chip in to try and support the affected students.
