The government is engaging the private sector in harnessing of employment opportunities available within the digital economy through the establishment of essential infrastructure. The strategic move was highlighted during the 5th anniversary celebration of Inua AI, where ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering the development of artificial intelligence in Kenya.
He noted the government’s plans to support AI initiatives, pointing out that improving broadband connectivity was one such key action. He appreciated the great role digital innovations had played in helping the country remain resilient to economic and climate shocks. “Cybersecurity offers tremendous opportunities with more than 3.5 million vacant positions across the globe”, said Tanui. “We would like to see more entities create opportunities in Cybersecurity and Software Development”.
Inua AI founder and CEO Humphrey Muchuma announced plans by the firm to fund 20 students pursuing technology-related courses and establish 10 digital centers across the country next year. “We have expanded our services to offer software engineering and cyber security,” Muchuma said. “We plan to support young innovators with promising ideas.”
Tanui maintained that the government still supports AI and other digital initiatives. There was a need to listen to business leaders and entrepreneurs with a view to changing policies where appropriate, and also improving ICT infrastructure. “We will continue to engage with investment partners to understand how Kenya can provide more value to the private sector,” he added.
He pointed to the creation of digital jobs as a clear illustration of the challenges to unemployment. He urged Kenyan talent to take up the opportunity offered on the digital space. “By offering services to international clients, you are building the brand of Kenyan talent,” he said.
