Improving Maternal and Newborn Health: KMTC Kabarnet Urged to Introduce Midwifery Course

Dr Solomon Sirma, the Baringo County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, has asked Kenya Medical Training Centre (KMTC) located in Kabarnet to start offering a Midwifery Course. This request aims to fill the gap of midwives who are currently not serving at the facility.

The CECM, speaking during International Midwifery Week at Baringo County Referral hospital, expressed his sentiments where he noted that introduction of the course will greatly boost care for maternal and neonatal health in medical centers throughout the area.

Sirma also noted that even though the skill birth attendance in Baringo is at 65 per cent, the health official said that the county has a goal to raise this number up to 85 per cent by training more midwives within the county.

He praised the students for their help with the neonates and mothers, pointing out that training more staff was important to expand the quarter.

Sirma, backing his support, he promised to restructure the health sector. This includes providing enough drugs and enhancing the working environment of staff.

Midwife Association Chairperson Tecla Ngotie, who was speaking during the event, advised midwives to be on the frontline in voicing challenges faced at their work place.

She also pressed for new regulations to oversee the association, stressing that collaboration with other health sectors and non-state actors will be essential in enhancing the situation and tackling difficulties encountered by midwives within the country.
