Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has revealed that all his children study in public schools within the County, setting a good example to other parents. This move by Barasa, a high-ranking politician, underscores his belief in the public education system.
In a recent interview, Barasa proudly disclosed that two of his young children are currently studying at Mumias Central Primary School. He underscored that all his children attended the same public primary school, thus deepening his relationship with public education. Of significance, his eldest son, currently at the University of Nairobi, and another son at Strathmore University, both started their educational journey at this school.
This stance by Barasa totally contrasts with the trend among the parents, who often opted for the costly private schools, thinking that these offered quality education. In taking his children to a public school, Barasa tries to bring them up in a manner that is going to make them humble and appreciate their roots, even if they eventually rise to high levels in life.
I want them to understand the humble beginning even when they get the exotic life,” said Barasa, reflecting on his growing up. His personal experience of walking to school underlines the message he passed through: resilience and the need to stay grounded.
It defies social norms through actions by Barasa and shows the potential of public education, making other parents embrace local public schools for the future of their children. His story serves to remind one that quality education is not determined by its price tag but by values and experiences.
