Three officials from Kuppet Kakamega County were yesterday arrested and charged with causing chaos in one of the local schools. Detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Kakamega East Subcounty arrested them.
They were first detained at Shianda Police Station in Mumias East before being taken to Kakamega Central Police Station. The three stand accused of attempting to forcefully eject teachers from the school and threatening those who were willing to continue teaching.
Kakamega County Deputy DCI boss Nicholas Waringa confirmed the arrests, saying the matter was under investigation by the Kakamega East DCI team. However, Kakamega East DCI boss Lovina Omolo declined to comment, arguing she was not authorized to talk to the press on the matter.
The arrest of the officials sparked protests, and their lawyer, Ken Echesa, has challenged their detention, demanding their immediate release or be taken to court. Echesa says that it is part of the wider government’s efforts to intimidate teachers from exercising their constitutional right to protest, urging educators not to be swayed by such tactics.
