Kerora Technical Institute Closed Indefinitely After Student Protests

Kerora Technical Institute in Ichuni Ward Nyaribari Masaba Kisii County, has been closed indefinitely following a rampage by students demanding the removal of the principal. This was occasioned by students protesting the alleged mismanagement of the institution by the principal.

They accused the administration of laxity, citing boycott of classes by tutors over unpaid salaries that sabotaged education. The students had also demanded a reshuffle in the administration, accusing the current management of arbitrarily increasing fees without proper justification.

One Muangu, a mechanical engineering student, expressed his frustration over the lack of practical sessions for which he had paid the required fees. “I haven’t done practical work despite paying fees for them as demanded by the institution. My course demands that we do practical work, but we are yet to do one. The management of the school has been here far too long; it is time they are changed,” she said.

The protest escalated and the detectives from Ramasha Police Post dispersed the students using teargas. Students have vowed not to resume classes until their demands are met.

As of now, the administration remains mum over the allegations of tutors skipping classes over unpaid salaries.
