Transport along Kiambu Road came to a standstill earlier on Monday 24th 2024, after students of Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology staged a protest. The strike was an indication of displeasure following an assault incident by security officers on one of the learners within the institution.
Incident Details
The students took to the streets yesterday after videos of one of them being brutally whipped by no fewer than three security guards from KIST circulated on social media, particularly on X, formerly Twitter. The reason for the assault still remains unknown.
Students’ Demands
Reacting over the incident, protesting students made the following demands:
- Justice for the Assaulted Student: They demanded that the authorities probe the act properly and that justice be brought to their injured peer.
- Accountability for Security Guards: The students also demanded that security guards who were involved in the assault be reprimanded, and accountability taken for their actions.
Police Intervention
Protests resulted in a massive traffic congestion along the busy Kiambu Road. The police were deployed in large numbers to contain the situation and also restore order to the streets. Even after many efforts by the college administration to persuade students, it went ahead, pointing out that they meant business seeking justice.
Institutional Response
Until the time of this writing, Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology had issued no statement addressing the killing. This lack of communication has highly contributed to the unrest and anger among students.
