In a major boost aimed at expanding the skilled work pool, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Technical Training, Innovation, and Social Services of Kisumu, John Awiti, said the demand in the region for technical education and vocational training is sharply rising. This action is in line with the vision of increasing the quality and access to technical education by the county to cope with the labor market’s rising demand.
Surge in Enrollment
Kisumu County has realized a significant increase in trainee enrollment in Vocational Training Colleges, with a figure of up to 6,135 students. Such a surge shows the increasing recognition of the importance of technical skills and vocational education in the today job market.
“This significant milestone not only reflects the growing importance of skilled labor in our society but also underscores the pivotal role played by our department in shaping the future of our workforce,” said Awiti.
Investment in Training and Infrastructure
The county is trying to ensure that the various technical fields have an increased number of skilled artisans by prioritizing the recruitment of more trainers and retooling existing ones for quality outcomes.
Awiti said the county is committed to supporting training needs in vocational centers, which also include the welfare of students. He said the department has been offering initiatives to improve facilities and resources at vocational training centers with a view to providing an optimal learning environment.
Commitment to Future Workforce
Speaking at the Kisumu Youth Rotary Training Centre, Dr Awiti also reiterated that the county was determined to use vocational training as a platform for development. With main emphasis on Tech-Voc training, he says, Kisumu County will ensure it trains a workforce that is not only competent but also very flexible to the highly dynamic job markets.
The strategic county focus on vocational education resonates well with the national agenda of improving youth employability and reducing the rate of unemployment. Devoting resources to training on a technical level is making Kisumu a regional sphere of skilled manpower, which is an imperative course that lures diminished investments and drives economic growth.
