Kisumu Teachers Defy Court Orders, Continue Strike Over Unmet Demands

Post Secondary School teachers in Kisumu have defied a court order that had suspended their strike and taken to the streets to protest against unmet demands. The teachers, affiliated with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, took to the streets in Kisumu promising to persist in the fight for their rights.

Led by Executive Secretary Zablon Awange, they matched from Kondele going towards the central business district while carrying placards and blowing whistles to their voices heard. Awange said court orders would not intimidate them into returning to class, underscoring that they only take directives from their union leaders and not the courts.

Teachers met and strategized on the next move to push the agenda further, with Awange calling on them to stand strong as negotiation processes begin. He also warned national officials against yielding to pressure to end the industrial action, declaring that the teachers would take nothing less than what they are owed.

Teachers, who converged at the Jamhuri gardens, left one thing clear: “No cheque, no chalk.” They promised to keep a hawk’s eye on any of their colleagues who may seek to return to the classes, while reaffirming their commitment to the strike action until their demands are met.
