Kisumu Teachers Join Nationwide Demonstrations Over Unmet Demands

Hundreds of post-secondary school teachers in Kisumu have joined others from across the country in mass actions to press demands over failure to fulfill agreements entered with them.

With banners and whistles, the teachers matched through the town with KUPPET Executive Secretary (Kisumu) Zablon Awange in the lead. The procession started from Kondele and walked to the CBD through the Kisumu-Kakamega highway before finally converging at the regional education offices, where they issued a petition of their grievances.

In an earlier statement, Awange said the industrial action will go on until they were paid what was due. He had warned the country’s top education officials not to allow any compromise with the government that might compromise the teachers’ demand. Among the key demands is the immediate conversion of teachers teaching in junior secondary to permanent and pensionable terms.
