KNEC Extends Deadline for Submission of SBA Project Scores to End of July

KNEC has directed primary and junior schools to submit their 2024 School-Based Assessment project scores by the end of July. The move gives schools an extra week to complete their submissions, with a deadline that may further be extended if need be.

Background Information and Guidelines

The KNEC circular dated 6th March 2024 provided minute details on the nature and manner of executing and submitting the 2024 SBA projects. There were timelines for downloading, administering, and submitting the scores for the projects through the online KNEC platform. These projects are not insignificant in that they massively contribute to the final assessment scores at the primary and junior school levels.

Breakdown of SBA Projects

In primary schools, the SBA projects are taken in grades 3, 4, and 5, then contribute to the KPSEA, which is taken in grade 6. For junior schools, projects are done at grades 7 and 8, contributing to KJSEA, conducted at grade 9. The case is similar in senior schools, where projects are done at grades 10 and 11, with the final assessment being KSSEA, taken at grade 12 before proceeding to tertiary institutions.

Upcoming Written Tests

Other than the SBA projects, KNEC shall conduct written tests in the third term. The same shall be carried out from September 30 to October 24, 2024, for both primary and junior school classes. The subjects covered vary depending on the class to ensure that the learners’ knowledge and skills are assessed comprehensively.

Conclusion

The structured approach of the KNEC to SBA projects and written tests ensures a balance and comprehensive assessment amongst learners at different levels of education. The extension in the submission of scores for SBA is a leeway that is needed, hence enhancing a smooth evaluation process to the schools. With the progress of the year in academic activities, these assessments will form the core drivers for the students in Kenya toward the setting of their education outcomes.
