The Kenya National Union of Teachers is requesting the government to send more teachers to Narok County. Malel Langat, who is the First Vice National Chairman, noted that lack of enough teachers has made it difficult to enhance the quality of education in the area.
He added that if students from the county were to compete well with their counterparts in the country, it was necessary to hire more teachers.
“Narok has been forgotten for quite some time. If we want our children to compete well with kids from other regions, Teachers Service Commission needs to send more teachers here – particularly JSS ones,” he noted.
As per his words, the county has been left behind for a long time, criticizing local leaders for not pushing towards a solution. Langat repeated the union’s promise to fight for teachers’ rights, stating that teachers are key in enhancing the country’s educational levels.
“Knut is always ready to fight for the rights of teachers. There are many things we want to see changed, and we will continue our efforts even if the government tries to scare us. The Union remains strong,” said Langat.
At the same time, JSS teachers from Nandi have made a strike notice to not come for work if the government does not fulfill their requests before schools reopen. The teachers want to be absorbed into Permanent and Pensionable terms, as well as an increase in their salaries. They assert that it was against the law to put them under internship for two years.
