KNUT Demands More Teachers for Special Schools

The Kenya National Union of Teachers is now demanding the immediate posting of more teachers to special schools countrywide. Koibatek/Mogotio Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Francis Bundotich revealed the acute shortage amidst rising cases of student enrollments.

He noted that thousands of trained special education teachers remain jobless. Special schools in the country have been neglected for long. These schools grapple with understaffing and we want to ask TSC to post teachers to these schools,” he said.

Bundotich termed the continued neglect of the institutions as a gross violation of special needs learners‘ rights. He also reacted to the bad infrastructure in these schools, calling for the national and county governments to act fast. Most special schools lack adequate infrastructure for learners. Indeed, it has greatly inconvenienced our learners, making it hard for them to go about their day-to-day activities. We want to ask both levels of government to urgently address this problem,” added Bundotich.

A spot check within the Rift Valley region has exposed a few special schools with over 400 learners and less than 10 teachers, really showing the dire need for more staff and better facilities.
