The current impasse involving JSS teachers who have vowed to continue with their nationwide stricke until their concerns to be employed on permanent and pentionable terms have been addressed just got a new twist with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) now calling for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to retract all show cause letters issued to Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern involved in the protests. In a media briefing at KNUT headquarters in Nairobi, Secretary General Collins Oyuu pointed out the importance of adhering to the Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) in the recruitment and employment processes.
In his media briefing, Oyuu confirmed KNUT’s readiness to engage in high-level discussions with TSC to resolve the current impasse. He pleaded with the intern teachers to allow the union take on the matter with the hiring body, asserting KNUT’s commitment to finding a lasting solution. Oyuu noted that KNUT anticipated the issuance of show cause letters as a precursor to disciplinary actions, which has now occurred.
Additionally, the union has urged TSC to create a framework to resolve the dispute with the intern teachers amicably. KNUT has also called on all protesting teachers to return to their workstations immediately, assuring them that the union has taken over the case and urging TSC not to penalize any teachers involved in the demonstrations.
Oyuu reaffirmed that the union is negotiating a return-to-work agreement with TSC on behalf of the intern teachers.
