The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has rejected the nomination of Julius Migos Ogamba as the CS for Education, saying the docket should be headed by an educationist.
A number of officials from KNUT have expressed unease over Migos, who is a lawyer by profession, arguing that lack of educational background will affect his effectiveness on addressing challenges affecting the sector. Second National Vice Chair Agrrey Namisi has led in the criticism, citing that the education sector requires one with expertise and experience in education.
“We have no problem with the nominee as a person, but we feel the education sector needed someone with a clear background in the sector who would not need orientation,” Namisi said.
Namisi addressed an AGM for Chepkoilel KNUT branch, Eldoret, accompanied by other officials from the same branch headed by the Executive Secretary, Sammy Bor. He stressed that what the education sector needed was a CS who would fit perfectly in the position and hence fast-track reforms, especially at this critical stage of implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum.
He noted that with the Kenya Kwanza administration at its midterm, the need to make such changes may slow down the pace of progress that needs to be achieved in the sector.
Despite opposing the nomination of Ogamba, KNUT officials lauded the move by the government in employing intern teachers on permanent terms, stating it was a great achievement towards the betterment of the education sector.
