KSSSA Western Region Rugby 7s Competition Resumes Amidst Tough Challenges

The KSSSA Western Region Rugby 7s competition will resume on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Mumias starting from the quarterfinals. The event that was postponed last week due to a boycott of referees over low pay will see the national champions Koyonzo High face a stiff battle against Kibabii Boys of Bungoma County.

Koyonzo’s coach Eliud Okwemba admitted to the stiff competition, saying, “The competition has been stiff from the county to the regional level. My target though, is to retain the regional title, but we have a tough battle in front of us.” He said he was more focused on the Western region before thinking of the nationals.

In other quarterfinals, Kimobo will be up against Musingu High, Vihiga will fight it out with giant Kakamega High School, and the winner of the match pitting Koyonzo and Kibabii will lock horns with hosts St Peter’s Mumias against Chavakali. The first semifinal will pit the winner between Koyonzo and Kibabii against the winner of Kimobo and Musingu. Another semifinal will see the winner of Vihiga and Kakamega face the winner of St. Peters Mumias and Chavakali.

The teams are set to join action in the national championship in Kisumu from July 29 to August 6 are St Mary’s Yala, Friends School Ajengo, Kisii School, Otieno Oyoo from the Nyanza region, Bwake and Kabianga High from the Rift Valley region, Alliance High, Mpesa Academy, Upper Hill, and Nairobi School.

In the girls’ Sevens, Bishop Sulumeti will lock horns with Moi Girls Kamusinga, Mbakalo with Eregi Girls, Madira Girls with Mwira, and Kimobo with Kongit in the quarterfinals.
