Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has welcomed Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to the union. “The place where JSS teachers are placed is in premises where primary schools are situated, but from the interpretation in terms of their work, they fall under the secondary school level and, as such, can be members of KUPPET” he said.
While speaking on June 7 at Sengera location in Bomachoge Chache Constituency during the burial of the late Nicodemus Ang’asa, Kisii County Branch Executive Secretary Joseph Bincha extended an invitation to JSS teachers. “We welcome our brothers and sisters to the Union because it will bargain and stand for them before the employer for better working terms,” Bincha said.
Bincha, who also spoke, asked the government to move with speed and ensure that all JSS teachers recruited under internship are put on Permanent and Pensionable terms as keeping them on contract is a clear violation of the Employment Act.
The teachers were also asked to discharge their duties with love and always appreciate that the children can be of a different understanding and should not allow the Government to interfere with their work. He also asked parents to work in synergy with teachers so that their children can perform in class as it is only a direct effort that will bear a good result in the classroom.
The teachers eulogized the late Nicodemus Ang’asa, who was well known for touching many students’ lives. Ang’asa was a dedicated teacher at St Mary’s Nyabiore Girls School and had earlier served at St Angela Sengera Girls School. He has left behind a widow, who is also a teacher, and their teenage children.
