More than 900 teachers at Moi University protested in Eldoret on Monday, August 26 expressing their dissatisfaction with ongoing issues affecting the institution. Represented by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Moi University chapter, the teachers are demanding changes within the University Council due to allegations of mismanagement.
Under the leadership of UASU chapter chairman Richard Okero and national trustee Jane Michael, teachers voiced concerns regarding the universitys failure to transfer their loan payments to banks over the four years despite deductions from their salaries. They also highlighted that pension contributions had not been forwarded and statutory deductions had not been remitted for a period.
During a meeting on August 19 Branch Secretary Ojuki Nyabuta confirmed that the strike was endorsed by officials following unresolved issues. The teachers have committed to sustaining the strike until all their requests, including salary payments and adherence to the 2017 2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) are addressed.
Acknowledging the concerns presented by teachers, Council Chairman Dr. Humphrey Njoroge mentioned that the university had sought a meeting with UASU to address matters such as salary delays and CBA implementation. UASU representatives under the leadership of Nyabuta have voiced their discontent with the pace of addressing these issues.
The faculty members are calling on the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) to look into the misuse of funds amounting to, over Ksh1 billion in the universitys funding scheme. The strike is set to persist until a Return, to Work Agreement (RTWA) is agreed upon and settled.
