MP Omboko Milemba Urges Reinstatement of Ksh13.5 Billion for Teachers’ CBA

The KUPPET Chairman, who is also the MP for Emuhaya is now requesting that the Ksh13.5 billion which was initially meant for the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement be reinstated.

Speaking in Parliament, Milemba questioned why the funds allocated to the Teachers Service Commission had been slashed due to the rejection of the Finance Bill 2024.

“We must amend this budget to include the Ksh13.5 billion for the teachers’ CBA,” said Milemba.

He warned that if the funds are not reinstated, then teachers have no option but to strike.

He elaborated on four key issues raised by teachers, which included the reinstatement of the second phase of CBA, that cost Ksh13.5 billion, medical cover for teachers at Ksh15 billion, promotion of teachers requiring Ksh1.5 billion and employment of 46,000 Junior Secondary School teachers.

The TSC’s budget has been cut by Ksh10 billion in recurrent expenditure, meaning teachers will not get their full CBA as agreed,” said Milemba.

He called on the Chairperson of the Budget Committee to amend the supplementary budget to allocate Ksh13.5 billion for CBA and another Ksh15 billion for medical cover. Failure to view this positively, he warned, the teachers strike will begin as early as next week.
