The County Government of Murang’a has joined hands with a non-governmental organization (NGO), Food for Education, in order to expand an existing porridge program and offer lunch services to primary school students.
As per the deal, the school feeding program is being piloted in St Marys, Makomboki, Thaara, Kirungu and Kanyenyaini. Other schools that will have the school feeding program include Muthiria, Kiriaini, Wanjerere, Kiriaini as well as Gikuu Primary School.
Currently, 10 primary schools have been registered in the feeding programme where parents pay Ksh10 for their children to have a meal.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata has said that the feeding programme was put into place in specific primary schools with an aim to enhance education levels.
Chief Whip of the Murang’a County Assembly, Morris Thuku, who supervised the programme at Kiriaini Primary School, stated that it was created to aid learning for the young ones. Thuku indicated that Seeing the school achieve 100 per cent attendance in the last 2 days left a strong impression on him. He expressed that 10 new students have shown interest in transfering from nearby primary schools that lack a similar arrangement desiring to join those with the program.
