The almost complete Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Matungu campus, is set to open its doors for Admissions. This follows final touches being put on a three-storey building that will house administrative offices, classrooms, and a library at the campus located in Khalaba ward. This is according to Kassim Kulubi, Clerk of Works in charge of the area.
Ready for Admissions March 2024
Kulubi disclosed that good progress so far was being made, adding that the institution would be ready to take in students for the intake this March 2024. A recent inspection by officials from the KMTC Kakamega campus gave a green light for the operations to start, further giving confidence in the project.
This campus is a game-changer for Matungu. We have invested so much into it, and the reception that has come from the people is extremely overwhelming,” Kulubi observed. He said the local leadership, led by the area MP, Peter Oscar Nabulindo, is fully invested in ensuring this new campus succeeds. “We don’t want our students traveling long distances for medical training anymore,” he added.
Kulubi also mentioned that at the new campus, students would be allowed to go to local health facilities for practical training. These will be Khalaba Health Centre, Matungu Level IV, and Lunganyiro Model Centre, which are all within the vicinity. This will not only benefit the students but also upgrade healthcare services in the area.
The campus will be full and complete by the time students begin classes, subject to completion of pending installations of water and electricity, among others, in the coming weeks.
Community Impact
The local community has welcomed creation of KMTC Matungu with both hands. Mzee Gregory Konyore, a neighbor to the college, thanked the MP for his prowess in leadership, which enabled him to bring the project to the area. “The livelihoods of the locals will definitely increase with the coming of this college, and we’re ready to welcome the students,” Konyore said.
Some have even gone ahead to put up private hostels in anticipation of the students. This is an indication of the economic activities that this campus is likely to attract to this region.
Engagement of the Local Human Resource
Nixon Mulando, another resident, echoed the same sentiment on the business opportunites for the community. He also called upon KMTC to ensure that the staffing of its new campus also involves the engagement of local people to further empower them.
Those present included the area’s renowned medical trainer Daniel Mbakaya, among others. He promised to fight to ensure the first batch of students reports to the institution before the end of March next year.
Fully Funded by Matungu NG-CDF
The campus sits on a six-acre plot and was fully funded by the Matungu National Government Constituency Development Fund under the stewardship of Peter Oscar Nabulindo. Similarly, the new institution is expected to create even deeper impacts on the community and society beyond in medical training, setting the stage for both educational and economic development in the area.
