Now that the Teachers’ Service Commission has confirmed to absorb 26,000 intern junior secondary school teachers on permanent and pensionable basis starting July 1st, we have detailed what they should expect to be paid in their new positions alongside allowances that come with it.
We expect the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to confirm the status of 26,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers by July 1, 2024, to permanent and pensionable (P&P). This will result in a significant salary increase for these teachers.
For the past three weeks since schools reopened for the second term, intern teachers have been protesting their low salaries. Those in JSS currently earn KSh 20,000, while their counterparts in lower primary receive KSh 15,000, with no allowances. The P&P confirmation will bring a welcome change, with improved salaries reflected in their paychecks.
Upon P&P verification, teachers holding degrees or diplomas will be placed in Job Group C2, equivalent to the role of a senior primary school teacher.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) 2024/2025, effective July 1, 2024, outlines the salary range for Job Group C2. It falls between approximately KSh 38,286 and a maximum of KSh 47,858.
Newly hired teachers will start at KSh 38,286, with automatic salary increases after three years.
The housing allowance for C2 teachers varies by location:
- Nairobi Area: KSh 16,500
- Major Municipalities: KSh 12,800
- Minor Municipalities: KSh 9,600
- Other Areas: KSh 7,500
C2 teachers are also entitled to:
- Annual Leave Allowance (paid once): KSh 6,000
- Commuter Allowance: KSh 4,000
Those working in hardship areas can receive an additional hardship allowance of KSh 10,900.
Teachers also have access to a health insurance scheme offered by their employer.
