Parliamentary Committee Opposes Scrapping School Feeding Programme Acknowledging Its Importance

The Parliamentary Committee on National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) is against the government’s proposal to remove the school feeding program, acknowledging that it plays a crucial role in education. Musa Cherutich Sirma, who is the Chairman of the parliamentary Committee as well as the MP for Eldama Ravine constituency – he emphasized how important the program was for keeping low rates of students leaving school and ensuring a higher rate of transition within lower classes. He made the remarks when they went to Mvita Constituency located in Mombasa where they looked at suggestions for Internet entry and innovation centers.

Sirma highlighted how important the feeding program was for kids in poor regions, stressing that it works as both a source of nourishment and reason to come to school. He noted that some children go to school because of the program,” and cautioned on stopping the initiative as it could cause harm to school enrollment. Sirma also made it clear that school feeding isn’t part of NG-CDF according to law as it is now, which hints at needing changes in legislation for its inclusion within NG-CDF’s duties.

Meanwhile, Mvita MP Mohamed Machele announced that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hubs will be set up in the constituency. The news was passed on from Eliud Owalo, who is the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications as well as Digital Economy in Kenya’s Government. Eliud made an announcement on construction of 1450 ICT hubs throughout every ward of the country. The initiative was marked during the ICT Authority’s 10th-anniversary event held in Nairobi on December 12 last year, which aims to bolster grassroots ICT development and fortify the digital economy foundation.
