An alarm has been sounded following the recent fire incident at Nguu Secondary School in Kibwezi West, Makueni County. Investigations have been launched to establish the cause and perpetrators of the blaze. Already, the incident piles up to a shocking trend of school unrest in the region, with Nguu being the third school to register disturbances in Makueni.

In the Sunday evening of July 14, 2024, a fire gutted the boys’ dormitory of Nguu Secondary, a mixed day and boarding school. The dormitory was totally razed by flames, although there were no injuries or deaths.

Though the authorities at the institution have maintained low-key information about the incident, several staff who talked to us in confidence confirmed that police are investigating the incident. At this time, it is not known what caused the fire and who is to blame.

This incident comes at a period that has witnessed similare cases such as that of Nguu Secondary School, not in isolation, but after Mukaa Boys and Kaumoni Boys Schools. All these have equally been disrupted but later resumed normal sessions.

There were rumblings at Mukaa Boys and that of Kaumoni Boys, although very little information has been provided on the nature of the issue that halted learning in the schools. The incidents heighten the worry for educators, parents, and local authorities over the causative factors of unrest in these schools within Makueni County.

The police are investigating the cause of Nguu Secondary School fire, whether it was an accident or otherwise.
