Dr Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education has made it clear that there will not be any extension given to Term Two in primary and secondary schools despite late opening.
The PS in a circular dated May 9, 2024 seen by Education News Kenya and addressing the regional, county, and sub- county education directors tells them that schools should make sure to come up with a way for recovering time lost because of delays in reopening caused by nationwide flooding.
He told the leaders of institutions to make and apply tough safety rules, such as actions for reducing chances of flooding and guaranteeing buildings remain strong. He added that they must also fix any harm brought by bad weather events.
Dr Kipsang’s newest directive was given a few days ago, after the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu expressed that possible extension of second term could be considered due to prolonged school closure during his visit to Karen C Girls Secondary school in Langata, Nairobi County for observing the impact of floods.
“It’s been two weeks of postponement. We will look at it, especially for those in From 4, and figure out how to make up by extending the term a couple of days,” Machogu said on Thursday May 11.
Schools are also requested by the Ministry to adjust learning hours if the current heavy rains continue impacting learning in the entire country. But for school transportation, schools have been given the instruction to follow the hours of 6am until 6pm. Schools will reopen on Monday, May 13 as they were closed due to the floods.
