Retooling Initiative for JSS Teachers Begins in West Pokot

The Kenyan government has been conducting retooling of basic education teachers in an effort to align with the new competency based curriculum. The program was unveiled for junior Secondary Schools (JSS) teachers began in West Pokot where it was launched at Nasokol Girls Secondary School with over 600 teachers attending.

Capacity Building Efforts

Teachers in the West Pokot county were encouraged to embrace the government’s capacity building efforts by Deputy TSC Director, Joseph Nzioka. He emphasized TSC’s commitment to continuous teacher retooling to meet CBC demands, promoting quality, equity, and relevance in education.

ICT Integration

Nzioka highlighted the role of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), TSC, Ministry of Education, and partners in designing programs that integrate Information Communication Technology (ICT) into teaching. Dr. Nakhisa Kusimba, the training moderator, encouraged a shift from traditional methods to digital learning to make education more engaging.

Challenges

Despite the positive steps, teachers pointed out challenges such as poor infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and low literacy levels among students and parents. Neilson Musani, chairman of curriculum support officers, stressed the need for teachers to acquire modern competencies to effectively deliver in the evolving educational landscape.
