Rift Valley Runners Dominate KTCSA National Athletics Championship

Runners hailing from the Rift Valley region showcased talent at the Kenya Teachers Colleges Sports Association (KTCSA) National Athletics Championship, which came to a close, on June 3 at Machakos Teachers Training College. This event marked the conclusion of the athletics events paving the way for ball games that are set to continue until June 12.

Impressive Displays by Rift Valley Athletes

The Rift Valley region demonstrated skill establishing a lead over other regions. In the women’s division athletes accumulated 299 points by clinching 19 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals totaling 32 medals. On the men’s side they garnered 273 points with 15 gold, 11 silver and four bronze medals for a total of 30 medals. Overall Rift Valley amassed a total of 572 points with 34 golds, 18 silvers and 10 bronzes—a total of 62 medals.

Notable Achievements

  • Khamala Marciline Wanyama, from Mosoriot TTC dominated disciplines by clinching victories in the following events: she won meters in just 12 seconds; long jump with a distance of 5 meters; triple jump covering10.67 meters;200 meters in25.04 seconds; and anchored her team to victory inthe4x400 meters relay with a timeof4;16 minutes.
  • In the mens category Saith Chepkukutia Tipcho excelled by winning events such as 400 meters hurdles clocking 3:59.2 minutes, 5,000 meters finishing in1: 59.2 minutes, 800 meters race and               10 km run.

Regional Standing

The Eastern region clinched the second spot with a total of 274 points securing three gold, five silver and eight bronze medals making it a total of 16 medals. On the hand the Central and Coast regions found themselves at the end of the standings. Central managed to gather 81 points along, with four bronze medals while the Coast region accumulated 43 points alongside two silver medals.

Noteworthy institutions like Kericho and Chesta TTC from Rift Valley also achieved success by winning medals in events including discus, javelin, shot put, pole vault, high jump and hammer throw.
