Road Accident Involving St. Joseph’s Kamasare Secondary School Bus Leaves Students Injured

Over 12 students under St. Joseph’s Kamasare Secondary School are currently receiving treatment for injuries following today’s tragic road accident involving their school bus. Coming merely last Sunday, on the 14th of July 2024, this is just an escalation of growing concerns over road safety and student well-being on the move.

The accident occurred at the Nyamira-Kisumu junction that branches off towards Oyugis town. A police report indicated that the bus lost control after a puncture on its rear tyre and rolled several times. The accident happened around 6:30 am, at the time when the bus was carrying 41 students and four teachers.

Students with minor injuries were treated at Okita Nursing Home in Kadongo town, Homa Bay County and those with severe injuries were then referred to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment. The speed at which medical care facilities from the local level responded was instrumental in controlling the situation stemming from the accident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the situation as chaotic and distressful, as the bus rolled over a couple of times. Passersby and local residents were quick to act and help in evacuating the kids and teachers from the bus before the arrival of emergency services.

Preliminary reports indicate the puncture on the rear wheel made the driver lose control, but police have initiated deep investigations to rule out another possible course in the investigation into the cause of the accident. According to the Chronicle, the bus has been towed to Othoro police station, where it is expected to undergo a full check in the investigation of the cause of the accident.
