We recently outlined how TSE intents to complete on enforcing the CBA agreement it signed with teachers years ago, and as it turns out, teachers in rural parts of Kenya are expected to be the boggest beneficiaries this time around. The upcoming review is expected to touch on the basic pay as well as allowances.
During the phase 1 implementation that began in July 2023, teachers in the new regional groupings enjoyed increased housing allowances and basic salary raises ranging from 2.4% to 9.5%. The largest increase went to teachers with the lowest salaries (9.5%), while those at the top of the pay scale received a 2.4% raise.
Following the July 2023 raise, entry-level teachers at primary schools now earn between Sh. 22,793 and Sh. 28,491 per month.
Teachers in job grade C1, including those in primary, secondary, or lecturing roles, now receive annual salaries ranging from Sh. 28,491 to Sh. 35,614.
Lecturers and special needs teachers in grade C2 can expect a monthly salary between Sh. 36,621 and Sh. 45,776.
Grade C3 lecturers currently earn between Sh. 44,412 and Sh. 56,514 monthly.
The monthly salary range for teachers in job grade C5 is Sh. 62,272 to Sh. 78,667.
Senior Masters, Head Teachers, Deputy Principals, and Senior Lecturers (D1 grade) now earn between Ksh. 77,840 and Ksh. 95,101.
Finally, teachers in job grade D2 (Senior Master 1 and Deputy Principal 2) receive a minimum salary of Ksh. 91,000 and a maximum of Ksh. 110,000 per month.
The highest-paid TSC teachers are Senior Principals (D4 grade), who earn between Ksh. 118,000 and Ksh. 143,000 per month. School Chief Principals (D5 grade) have the highest basic salaries, ranging from Sh. 131,000 to Sh. 159,000 monthly.
In addition to the new base salaries, teachers are also receiving increased housing allowances. It’s important to note that all other allowances, besides housing, remain unchanged.
