Special Needs Teachers Under KUSNET Threatens Strike Over Unfulfilled CBA

The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers has announced that September is the strike month if the government does not meet the Collective Bargaining Agreement signed in 2011. What the union wants is that the Finance Act 2011 be implemented, recognizing the CBA with the Teachers Service Commission.

KUSNET officials from all over the country met in Narok to declare their readiness for industrial action. Mr James Torome, Secretary-General termed the continuous effort with no clear progress as discouraging to teachers. “TSC has not honored the CBA we signed in 2011. We have pushed for its implementation in vain. Schools will not open if the CBA is not implemented,” he said, urging parents to prepare for the strike. He criticized the opulence of State officers while teachers suffer.

Torome declared that their members would not report back for work in the third term, and also vowed they will not be available to hold talks once the strike begins. “The commission and the commissioners should be alert. We will not be available to hold talks once the strike kicks off. We have seen senior State officers exhibiting opulence when teachers are suffering. This is sad and unacceptable,” he added.

He also dwelt on some of the problems in the special schools in the country and said they needed urgent attention.
