St. Mary’s Yala Advances to Rugby 7s Quarters Amid Exciting Matches

The defending champions, St. Mary’s Yala, made a statement in advancing to the quarterfinals following an aggressive opening day of action at Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho. The team, led by coach George Kerima, filed two convincing wins that set the pace in the competition.

St. Mary’s Yala dominates

Yala outclassed hosts Cardinal Otunga High in the first match 26-14, and followed this up well with a dominant 34-5 win over St. Paul’s Gekano to book the quarterfinal slot on Friday. Coach Kerima expressed satisfaction, saying, “I’m happy we have already qualified for the quarters. We, however, want to win our last game so that we finish on top of our pool.”.

Mixed Results for Maseno School

The former champions, Maseno School, recorded a day of mixed results. It began with the strong win of 32-14 over Gendia and was followed by a slim loss of 17-10 to debutant Otieno Oyoo. This was a time for payback for Otieno Oyoo, who lost 7-0 to Maseno during the Kisumu County finals.

Fine Start by Kisii School

The regional 15’s champions, Kisii School, walloped St. Joseph’s Rapogi 22-7 to kick off the Sevens campaign. In another encounter, Friends School Anjego and Agoro Sare, coached by the Principal J.J Masime, ended 7 – 7.

Girls Sevens: Nyakach Dominate

In the girls’ Sevens competition, it was Nyakach who emerged as strong contenders with a 25-0 win over Magare in the opening game. Other massive results saw Enkinda draw 12-12 with St Anne’s Nyangoge while Nyangoge fell 15-10 to Nyakongo. Rangenyo cut down brilliant Asumbi 10-5 as Nyaginchenche also saw off Kamagambo Day 14-0.

Boys’ Football: Agoro Sare in Quarter-Final Hunt

Agoro Sare, buoyed by their chief principal Isaac Okeyo, tore Ong’icha from Kisii County 4-1 to sail into the quarterfinals. They had earlier held Kisumu Day to a 1-1 draw. Koderobara and Ong’icha drew blank in another match played at Gusii Stadium. At Kisii School, Ambira otherwise known as Mobimba claimed back-to-back matches against Tonga 1-0 and later 2-0 against Matutu PAG to storm the semifinals. Moreover, Matutu PAG were later awarded their abandoned game against Sameta High School which was called off due to crowd trouble with Matutu leading 2-1.

Netball and Basketball Results

Netball reigning champions Oyugi Ogango and former champions Nyakach Girls all made it to the Friday’s semifinals. Oyugi Ogango began their defense by 43-13 past Lambwe before 74-2 demolition of Kisii’s Omwari. Nyakach Girls defeated Nyango 26-13 before whipping Nyamira’s Rirumi 62-14.

In the Basketball 3×3 category, the boys had Onjiko 22-1 against Ekenyoro Technical, Ambira 16-4 against Migori Boys, Agoro Sare losing 8-10 to Nyansiongo, and Sawagongo 21-17 against Nyanchwa. For the girls, Tuk Jowi trounced Ogande 11-6, Nyakach defeated Sironga 8-1, Ngiya won 16-8 against Asumbi, and Sengera edged Manga Girls 11-10.
