Teachers to Renew TSC Certifications Every Five Years: Dr. Nancy Macharia Clarifies

In a recent address, TSC chief executive Dr. Nancy Macharia reaffirmed that teachers are obligated to renew their TSC certification after every five years. The new directive comes at a time when massive changes in the education sector have occurred within the last five years, with more still in the offing.

In an interview with news agencies, Dr. Macharia explained that the teaching profession would soon be at par with the legal and engineering fields regarding the renewal of certification. Just like lawyers and engineers who review their licenses for renewal after some time, public school teachers will now be obliged to recertify every five years.

According to Dr. Macharia, this move will ensure the teaching profession is in the same category with other professions like law and engineering. This move by TSC will serve as a measure of ensuring periodic recertification for teachers so that they remain informed on emerging trends in the teaching sector.

This is after the late Professor George Magoha announced major changes in university education as a way of improving the quality of education in the country. Some education leaders and tutors have opposed university education curriculum changes.

The question after Dr. Macharia’s move is how are teachers going to receive it? Are they going to buy into this? Reactions among teachers after the announcement of the TSC CEO are still awaited.

What is your take on the latest Teachers Service Commission directive? Dr. Nancy Macharia explained that it captures a need for teachers to renew their TSC certifications every five years.
