The school calendar for term 2 has been changed by the Ministry of Education. This came after the recent flooding in Kenya occassioned by heavy rainfall that led the President to delay school opening dates. In this new calendar, Term 2 will start as announced and already observed from 13 May 2024 – it’s different from before when it was supposed to begin two weeks earlier.
Delayed Term Start and Revised Dates
Education Secretary Ezekiel Machogu explained that heavy rains caused a one-week delay to the originally planned start date of April 29th, 2024. Additionally, President William Ruto initially extended the school closure due to the floods. However, based on advice from the Kenya Meteorological Department, this decision was later reversed.
The revised Term 2 schedule is as follows:
- Start Date:Starts on 13th May, 2024 (nationwide school reopening)
- Updated New Mid-Term Break: Thursday, June 26th to Sunday, June 28 th (3 days)
- August Holiday: Monday, August 5th to Friday, August 23rd (3 weeks) (Note: Dates may be subject to change based on further directives)
Teacher Training Institutes
Term 2 for teacher training institutes will run from April 29th to August 2nd. Their August holiday will be from August 5th to August 30th.
Remaining Terms and Exams
Going into term 3, we don’t expect much change from the initial calendar, as it is, term 3 Is expected to begin on August 26th, 2024 up until October 25th going for 9 weeks.
- KPSEA & KILEA Exams: Monday, October 28th to Thursday, October 31st (4 days)
- KCSE Exams: Monday, November 4th to Friday, November 22nd (3 weeks)
- December Holiday: Monday, October 28th to Friday, January 3rd, 2025 (long holiday following exams)
Teacher Training Institutes (Final Term)
Term 3: Starts Monday, August 26th and ends Friday, November 8th (11 weeks)
December Holiday: Monday, November 11th, 2024 to Friday, January 3rd, 2025 (extended holiday)
