A week ago, Nasokol Primary School played host to a very effective three-day Early Childhood Development Education Tayari Programme. The event came in handy with the sole purpose of strengthening skills and methodologies of ECDE teachers and leaving them motivated and empowered with the necessary tools to effectively improve learning outcomes at the pre-primary level.
Interventions for the Tayari Programme were set out in key areas relevant to early childhood education, focusing on the overall development of a young learner. The pedagogical skills imparted to the teachers included training in the use of Information Technology for aiding the process of learning. Emphasis was given to clear and quality aids, easy yet effective methodology, and the use of REALIA—real objects or environments for learning. Another significant feature of the programme was giving individual attention to the learner and addressing each child’s learning needs.
One of the salient features of the Tayari Programme was equipping teachers with smartphones, fitted with an app on the ECDE syllabus. The integration into technology will ensure uniformity in learning across all ECDE centers and comprehensively provide for uniform educational experience of young learners.
“Isaac Krop and Rahab Cheptoo, both ECDE teachers at Tampalal Primary School in Kishaunet zone, displayed their feeling of happiness and optimism after the seminar. They were certain that acquired skills and knowledge from the Tayari Programme will improve the learning process for the children”.
“We are excited about these positive changes this programme will bring. That’s what we will use, with new methods and tools, to have a better setting and engagement of our students towards studies and learning outcomes improvement, which is already visible,” Rahab Cheptoo said.
The pilot Tayari Programme was deliberately held for Mnagei Ward ECDE teachers and was hosted by the county government in collaboration with EIDU, a non-governmental organization improving early childhood education. Successful facilitation of the programme was headed by Rose Kochulem, the Mnagei Ward ECDE Coordinator, who was assisted by Hellen Kamama, a Sub-county ECDE Director from West Pokot. Their leadership and commitment played a key role in the success of the programme.
