Thousands of interns plan a sit-in at PSC offices on Monday, they include angry interns seeking employment after finishing their internship training. Over 50,000 interns have been volunteering since 2019 with hopes for job placement.
On their part, the interns argue that they have written several letters to the PSC with no response. “They said that once we get the certificate of completion, we are going to be absorbed,” one of the interns revealed. “We have been looking for employment since 2019.”
The PSC internship programme was rolled out in 2019, offering graduates skills, work ethics, and work experience. The interns get a monthly stipend of Sh25,000. By Thursday, PSC said 25,200 interns had benefited from the programme since its introduction.
Despite the fact that this opportunity came with several benefits. “We were trained and dumped,” said one group leader during a press conference. He has called upon graduates and parents to join the protest on Monday so as to protest for a chance to get job opportunities.
All the interns have documents of clearance and yet no job opportunities. Recently, the PSC stated that they had recruited 1,964 interns into different posts that existed, although few.
In a statement, the PSC said it acknowledged the contribution of the young interns, applauding their skills, work ethic, and enthusiasm. On 15th July, the commission met representatives of the interns to hear their complaints over the recruitment and selection process.
