As the Rift Valley leg of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association regional ball games came to an end in Bomet County, Trans Nzoia emerged tops in various disciplines. Their teams will represent the region in the national competition in rugby, football, and volleyball, which is set for Kisumu in August.
St Joseph’s Girls Secondary School will represent the region in rugby and girls’ soccer. The girls’ rugby team emerged champions following their 35-5 win over Bishop Njenga Girls, while their soccer counterparts booked a ticket for the nationals following their 2-0 win over Nasokol Girls of West Pokot in an exhilarating final match.
The defending champions in volleyball at nationals, Kesegon Girls High, lived to their billing by qualifying for nationals following an easy run in the group stages where they did not lose a single set.
St. Joseph’s Boys High School emerged victorious, taking the boys’ soccer title after a scintillating 2-1 win over Kajiado’s Laiser Hill in a fully attended Silibwet Stadium. The team advanced to the final by beating Ortum Boys High School 3-0. The chief principal, Cosmas Nabongolo, commended the boys for their dedication to sports, saying the institution nurtures students’ talents.
This has largely been supported by a strong fan base and the county government. St Anthony’s Boys High School has received support from the governor, George Natembeya, both this year and last year, which has been a motivating factor toward students performing well in respective disciplines.
Last year, Kesegon Girls, St. Anthony’s Boys, and Wiyeta Girls represented the region in national ball games in both volleyball and soccer. Among these was St. Anthony’s Boys’ Adrian Kibet, who emerged as the best player and booked a ticket to a Spanish football academy.
This goes to say that the great performances from Trans Nzoia County schools well stipulate the region’s commitment to sporting excellence and nurturing of talents.
