TSC Certifies Permanent, Pensionable Positions for Intern Teachers

In a recent memo, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has confirmed that intern teachers hired in 2022 will now be transitioned into pensionable roles. This decision is aimed at addressing the shortage of teachers and improving the quality of education in Kenya.

According to Joseph Mugele, Director of Staffing, at TSC intern teachers are instructed to remain on the payroll as interviews are set to commence soon after. The recruitment process is expected to be completed by end of the year.

The TSC has allocated a total of 25,550 slots for intern teachers and an additional 10,000 permanent pensionable positions to support the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). Out of these positions 9,000 are designated for secondary school educators while 1,000 are for school teachers. The intern positions consist of 21,550 slots for schools and 4,000 for primary schools.

This recruitment drive comes after President William Rutos directive to hire 30,000 educators for the year spanning from 2023 to 2024. Collaborative efforts, between the Ministry of Education Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and TSC will ensure that adequate teacher training is provided to meet CBC requirements.
