TSC Issues 4 Additional Months Contracts To Intern Teachers

TSC has now extended the contract for the intern teachers who were recruited on a four-month basis in September 2024, whose contract was supposed to expire on 31st August 2024; the new contract will run from 1st September 2024 to the month-long December 31st, with confirmation to permanent terms expected in January 2025.

TSC has ordered that willing tutors should undertake the renewal process before August 30, 2024, so they may not experience interruptions in service. The TSC also applauded the services offered by tutors in their letters of extension, noting how well they served to add value in education and in their own professional development.

This is amid continued protests by intern teachers for permanent employment: one of the grievances by the striking Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET. Their recruitment was declared illegal by the High Court, but TSC has filed an appeal.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba said the government had already set aside Sh18.7 billion to promote intern teachers starting January 2025. He assured the resources have been made available for the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement and retooling of teachers for Competency-Based Curriculum. However, KUPPET insists that the strike is still on in all counties pending any other negotiations and court orders.
