TSC Urges JSS Teachers to Return to Class Following Court Order

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) issued a statement yesterday evening, signed by Commission Chair Dr. Jamleck Muturi John. The statement urged all demonstrating Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to follow court orders and return to teaching duties.

The TSC reiterated its position that teachers must return to classrooms, as all public schools reopened on Monday 13th May 2024.

Dr. Muturi explained that the TSC internship program is a national government initiative designed to provide real-world work experience for teachers.

However, the program was challenged in court by the Forum for Good Governance and Human Rights. Ultimately, the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled in favor of the lobby group.

“While the court has issued a decision, it is currently on hold until August 1, 2024,” Dr. Muturi stated. “The Commission requests all teacher interns participating in the program to respect this court order and return to schools. Teaching and learning in all public schools officially resumed on May 13, 2024.”

Dr. Muturi further emphasized the Commission’s commitment to addressing concerns within the teaching sector and its continued flexibility in finding solutions.
