Tusome Programme Empowers Teachers in West Pokot to Boost Student Learning

The Ministry of Education, in partnership with USAID has launched a program called Tusome in West Pokot County to improve reading and writing skills among students in grades 1 – 3. The program includes two-day seminars at Nasokol Primary School for teachers focusing on translating English Language activities into Kiswahili to enhance education services and learning outcomes. Facilitated by Kongina Poghisho Felix, Roselyne Lopele and Clementine Lokong’ the seminars aim to implement the Kenya Primary Literacy Program. Teachers are being guided on the importance of bridging language barriers through translating activities into Kiswahili to create a learning environment for students.

The main goal of the Tusome program is to improve services and boost learning outcomes for students, in grades 1 to 3. By strengthening schools and education systems, the initiative aims to promote accountability, self-reliance, and resilience in the education sector. Additionally, the program aims to support youth organizations in enhancing community and family support networks for the wellbeing and academic success of students.

During the workshops, teachers will gain insights and strategies to enhance their teaching methods ultimately fostering a generation of skilled readers and writers in West Pokot County. This collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education and USAID demonstrates a commitment to tackling literacy issues at the level establishing a basis for learning and academic success among young learners in the area. Through programs like Tusome progress is being made towards creating a literate and empowered society, one classroom, at a time.
