TVET Institutions Urged to Emphasize Practical Welding Skills

Kenya’s TVET institutions have been advised by GFP International founder and chairman, Engineer Michael L. Vallez, to adjust their welding curriculum to focus on 85-90% practical work and 10-15% theory. Vallez stated that programs with more than 85% practical training will allow graduates to earn certification from the American Welding Society (AWS).

During the meeting which was attended by University Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar, Abubakar emphasized the critical importance of welding skills for the growth of the Dongo Kundu industrial park. She also stated that the university has adopted Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) with a 60% practical curriculum in welding and 40% theory.

Dr. Kipkirui Langat, Director General of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), announced a partnership with GFP International to create a certified AWS testing center in Kenya.

A team led by the TVET director, who is promoting the upgrade of ornamental welding to industrial welding, visited the Vice Chancellor of the Technical University of Mombasa. GFP International’s director, Engineer Vallez, is on a lecture tour of East African colleges, universities, and trade schools. These lectures will be particularly beneficial for students in architecture, engineering, and trade schools, preparing them to become future industry leaders and drive economic transformation through industrialization.
