West Pokot County Confirms 1092 ECDE Teachers as Permanent and Pensionable

The County Government of West Pokot has confirmed 1092 Early Childhood Development and Education teachers as permanent and pensionable employees. The announcement was made during a ceremony held at the governor’s official residence in Kapenguria, attended by over 1,600 teachers from different ECDE centers within the county. During the event, 568 teachers were placed under contract.

The govenor thanked teachers for their patience and selfless service towards the ECDE learners, and called on them to increase their efforts to repay this new commitment.

Announced the Salary Scales

The following is what the teachers would be receiving

  • Certificate in ECDE- Ksh 16,000
  • Diploma in ECDE- KSh 19,200
  • Degree in ECDE- Ksh 26,900
  • Coordinators- KSh 54,000

Concerns Over Pay Disparities

Although there were celebrations, some teachers speaking anonymously complained about the pay packages. They expected salary scales reflecting the advisories of SRC, which places the figures higher:

  • Certificate holders will be expecting KSh 33,000
  • Diploma holders will be expecting KSh 36,000
  • Degree holders will be expecting KSh 59,000

It is in the light of all this that teachers have pointed out the need to address the disparity if their morale is to be maintained and their compensation based on equity. They are hopeful that all these concerns will be resolved amicably and very fast, ensuring that the salaries really reflect the SRC recommendations.
